Launching a new product: DIY Bookbinding Kits
17/03/2020The Indigo Bookbinding Challenge
11/08/2020These uncertain times of lockdown and quarantine had a positive effect on me: I lost my fear of standing in front of the camera and talk live on Instagram!
Extraordinary situations like this require extraordinary measures, and I am happy to have taken that step and go live on Instagram to share my favourite bookbinding tools and talk more about making books with all my followers. So here it is in case you missed it or just want to watch it again: my Instagram Live Bookbinding Tools session.
What’s what in the world of bookbinding and what for can you use these tools? I hope you like it and find it helpful!
Here is a quick summary of what I talked about…
- The first tool you want to get for your home bindery: a paper folder! They are made out of different materials: plastic, animal bones, bamboo and Teflon.
The paper folder comes in very handy when folding the signatures of a book or to crease the paper after folding a cover. - If you want to pierce holes through the paper, e.g. for a Japanese Binding, you better get a bookbinding awl. In extreme cases and if you don’t have one at home, you can use a pushpin. Be careful and don’t hurt yourself!
- Getting bookbinding needles will definitely make the sewing process much easier. They are stronger than the common ones and have a bigger eye.
- Always use a piece of beeswax to wax your thread before starting to sew, especially if you are using linen thread. This way you will prevent kinks or the thread breaking.
- With these basic bookbinding tools, you will be able to make dozens of books. They are real tools for life!
